MATTHEW BROWN
"I use traditional tools and methods to make these Japanese color wood block prints. Color impressions are achieved by mixing pigment and rice paste with brushes directly on carved wooden blocks, generally a separate block for each color in a print. A flat hand-held disk, called a baren, is used to press the moist paper to the block, forcing the colors into the fibers of the paper. Blocks are made to compliment each other by means of carving directly through printed impresions pasted face down. Notches carved in the block facilitate registration."
