LOIS BEATTY
RESUME
From a background of painting and collage, then paper pulp
painting, I made what felt like a natural progression into monoprinting.
My prints are multi-layered, very painterly, and I use drypoint as a way of
dramatizing line. When I found myself in New Hampshire several years
ago, I gratefully joined Two Rivers Printmaking Studio to explore a wide
range of traditional print-making methods. I was not so much interested
in producing work in multiples as I was in expanding my vocabulary for
mark and surface. I am drawn to the fluidity and spontaneity of the
monoprint. My imagery is seen to fall on the abstract side of whatever
that line is, but it is always informed by reality: landscape, still life, and
botanical or human forms. I see contrast and conversion when I draw
shape and edge: bones that can be read as rigid or biomorphic, rusted
metal that is both sharp and weathering.
